We are a spin-out from the Uncertainty Project at the Institute of Petroleum Engineering, Heriot-Watt University. Spinning out in 2009 to develop a software product that combines the latest computer science research with years of expertise in the oil and gas industry.
Raven combines artificial intelligence and optimisation algorithms into a tool-set that supports History Matching, Forecasting and Development Optimisation under uncertainty for oil and gas problems. The tool-set has been tuned through years of research in the Uncertainty Project and designed in conjunction with the Intelligent System Lab at Heriot-Watt University.
The Uncertainty Project is an ongoing research project that investigates the best ways to history match reservoir models and from those history matches produce accurate estimates of risk and uncertainty in predictions of future oil production/reserves. With over 60 publications, including 13 journal publications and 4 book chapters on the subject, the Uncertainty Project is one of the leading groups worldwide on uncertainty quantification.
The Intelligent Systems Lab draws on inspiration from nature, and develops new approaches to intelligent systems via exploring new interactions and interfaces between machine learning, optimisation and complexity science.
Meet the Team
Prof. Mike Christie
Mike Christie leads the technologies deployed within Raven. After 18 years
with BP, Mike joined Heriot-Watt University in 1999. An SPE 25 year member,
he has pioneered numerous techniques within the oil industry.
Mike received the 1990 SPE Ferguson medal for accurate simulation of unstable miscible flooding. Mike’s unparalleled accomplishments in industry and academia make Raven an enviable tool.
Dr Daniel Arnold
Dan Arnold, PhD in Uncertainty Quantification from IPE at Heriot-Watt University, began his career in industry. His PhD provided specialist knowledge in integrating geological information into uncertainty quantification.
Dan’s experience covers running real field studies, with knowledge of the major commercial simulation and geomodelling software packages. Dan previously held a Royal Society of Edinburgh Enterprise Fellowship for commercialisation.
Jack Talbot has an MEng in computer software engineering from Heriot-Watt
University. With specialist knowledge of programming, in particular user
interface design and database development.
Jack uses his essential skills to create the game changing software we think the industry needs. His focus on software interface design is key to making our software as easy to use as possible.
Gordon Winton has an MSc in Energy, specialising in developing high efficient industrial processes. He spent 15 years working to develop and deploy hardware and software solutions as part of BAE systems.
Gordon's experience in delivery of highly dependable systems and customer orientated developed brings a strong foundation to Raven's client support and business workflow integration planning.
